The Yukon outfitting industry firmly supports the concept of wildlife management. In the last 10
years Yukon outfitters have donated in excess or $800,000.00 Canadian dollars or an average of
$80,000.00 per year, to wildlife enhancement projects and world conservation organizations. Often
the fund raising is done by having individual outfitters donate hunting trips to organizations and
then these donated hunts are auctioned. The money raised from these donations goes to benefit
wildlife in the Yukon and throughout the world in the form of wildlife enhancement. These projects
include a wide spectrum of biological research, species translocation education programs, and habitat
improvement.

In addition to financial support for conservation causes, outfitters have much to offer in terms of their local knowledge of
wildlife in the Yukon. Outfitters receive constant feedback from their guides and hunters on the overall health of wildlife in their
hunting concessions. Some outfitters have operated in the same area for thirty-five years. Many of the
outfitters are bush pilots, and in the process of running their businesses, regularly fly
throughout their concessions. As a result of the cumulative time spent within their areas, outfitters have an intimate
knowledge of habitats, predator-prey relationships, seasonal movements of animals, wildlife population fluctuations, and any
adverse environmental developments. Much of this local information is supplied to the Department of Renewable Resources
through discussions with staff biologists and others.
We realize that wildlife is not only the foundation of our industry, it is also a
part of what is special about the Yukon's wilderness legacy.
